Compassionate care sees Registered Nurse Lee Watkins crowned the Trust’s 100th DAISY Award honouree!

Lee, who works in the Critical Care Unit, was visited by Chief Nursing Officer Tracey Brigstock for a surprise presentation.

“It was an honour and complete surprise to receive the amazing DAISY Award from the Trust,” said Lee.

“I have to thank the wonderful family who nominated me and also the incredible team I work alongside here in Critical Care.

“Without the teamwork and support we all provide to each other, none of us would be able to deliver the high standards of care that we carry out on a day to day basis.

“I am privileged to be the 100th winner of the DAISY Award here at UHCW and I join a list of incredible individuals who all go that extra mile to make sure our patients and their loved ones feel that they are cared for and listened to by people who genuinely care and want to make a difference.”

His winning nomination was written by the family member of a patient:

“My grandad was admitted to the ITU unit, on the Saturday he was cared for incredibly by nurse Lee. From the moment myself and my grandma met Lee we felt comfortable and confident that he, with the support of the amazing doctors, were doing absolutely everything they could to help my grandad.

“Lee displayed kindness and compassion to all; I did not see him sit down. He was always busy and on the go, he recognised when he needed to talk to us and explained things clearly.

My grandma has reflected still on how she is so glad my grandad’s final days were cared for in the Intensive Therapy Unit (General Critical Care) and especially by Lee. Lee displayed humour, honesty and is a credit to the amazing team.

We thank him and the rest of the team for supporting my family and of course supporting my grandad to live his last few days with dignity. That is all we could ask for.”

The DAISY Awards, funded by UHCW Charity, celebrate the skilful and compassionate care our nurses and midwives provide on a daily basis. Patients and their families can nominate someone for a DAISY Award via our website.
