Addressing Mental Health Inequalities
Tackling health inequalities is one of the key priorities of Coventry and Warwickshire ICS and we know that mental health inequalities lead to poorer physical health and reduced life expectancy compared to the general population.
There are also a range of protective and risk factors for mental health that are unequally distributed across our local communities and for those with existing mental health conditions.
The Prevention Concordat shines a light on mental health inequalities and supports us as a health and care system to identify areas in which we can take action to reduce the risk factors and strengthen the protective factors.
As part of this, we are actively working to tackle mental health inequalities and this includes projects providing enhanced support for those who face a higher risk of poor mental health, including:
- Sahil and Cruse – to reduce mental health inequalities in South Asian Communities in Coventry, Rugby, Leamington Spa and Warwick
- St. Oswald’s Church – to provide mental health support for up to 50 men in Tile Hill, a deprived area of Coventry
- Rugby Borough Council – to provide weekly mental health support to young people in high deprivation areas of Rugby
- Children’s Society – to provide emotional health and wellbeing pop up provision to 10–25-year-olds in Coventry and North Warwickshire
- Migrant Mental Health Project – to provide all-age mental health care to newly arrived communities in Coventry and Warwickshire, working with a range of partners including Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT) Refugee Wellbeing Service, Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre, Innini Initiative, Coventry Migration Team, Warwickshire Migration Team, Coventry City Council, and Warwickshire County Council
- Arty Folks – to provide two full days per week of transformational programmes to 100 young people aged 17-29 in Coventry, with the aim of improving their mental health
- Forest of Hearts – to provide green therapy programmes to empower individuals facing mental health challenges in Coventry, Nuneaton, Warwick, Bishopton and Stratford-upon-Avon
- Cultural Inclusion Network (CIN) – The CIN provides a platform for Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise organisations to raise opportunities to represent the sector in key strategic meetings, strengthening their position and increasing their opportunity to secure vital resources
