Asthma Friendly Setting Accreditation
Asthma Friendly Setting accreditation is available to all schools within Coventry and Warwickshire area who are keen to demonstrate their commitment to developing and raising awareness of Asthma and its management to help our children and young people to manage their health effectively and give them a chance at healthier adult life.
Becoming an Asthma Friendly School aims to:
1. Improve asthma awareness and management for teachers and staff.
2. Improve quality of learning and overall attendance of children with asthma
3. Provide additional support with the health, wellbeing, and safety of pupils.
4. Ensure a school is delivering evidence-based best practice.
5. Provide reassurance for parents and families or children with asthma.
6. Enable schools to promote its status in the community.

You never know this might save someone’s life, from being yet another preventable asthma death.
1. Educational settings must meet the criteria as listed below for the accreditation.
2. Apply for the accreditation using the application form and include copies of documents, such as the register, emergency kit checklist, asthma/medical policy etc.
Criteria for the accreditation:
- Asthma Awareness Training: At least 85% of the staff employed by the setting have completed Asthma Awareness Training (Tier 1 Education for health training or Training through school nursing team) in the last 12 months.
- Have an Asthma Register for all children and young people who have asthma (confirmed or suspected)
- Each child to have a Personalised Asthma Action Plan (PAAP) at school (requested from parent/carer) (see resources section for template)
- Record and share information with parent/carer about the child’s asthma whilst in school.
- Have an up-to-date Asthma Policy or Asthma section on the school’s medical policy. For a sample or template click here.
- Have a named Asthma Champion with specific responsibility and oversight of the school’s Asthma Plan/Policy
- Have an emergency Inhaler Kit which includes compatible spacer.
- Ensure Asthma medications and spacers are easily accessible in the classroom.
- Have a plan for environmental disposal of inhalers.
- Recognise the impact of indoor and outdoor air pollution and allergen control. School is signed up to a Safe and Active Schools Award through Safe and Active Schools Programme – Warwickshire County Council (available for Warwickshire and Coventry schools)
Educational Settings can apply for the accreditation any time during the year when they are confident that they meet the criteria above.

- Display and promote your accreditation and share with families and local community.
- A selection of schools will be audited annually following the accreditation.
- Renew your accreditation every 2 years by submitting an updated application form.
