Health equity assessment tool
The Health Equity Assessment Tool (HEAT) is a framework to enable identification of practical actions in services to address health inequalities and improve health outcomes. It enables consideration of a range of population groups who may experience worse outcomes, access or experience and mitigate any negative impacts of the service.
HEAT can be used at any point during the service, at commissioning or during delivery. It can be used to understand gaps in the service or the requirement for more robust data in order to effectively understand who the service is reaching and more importantly, who it is not reaching that it should be.
HEAT was originally developed by Public Health England and has two versions, the full version and the simplified version. We have also developed an easy use guide to help colleagues complete the HEAT. Support is also available from the Programme Managers for Health Inequalities, contact hannah.watts13@nhs.net or Jackie.kerby@nhs.net.
