Bladder and Kidney

Blood in your pee can be a sign of bladder and kidney cancers. It mainly affects people aged over 50.

Bladder cancer

Your bladder is part of the urinary system, filtering waste products out of your body and producing pee (urine). Cancer of the bladder usually starts in the lining of the organ and can spread to the muscle.

Symptoms

  • Blood in your pee
  • Peeing more often and urgently
  • Pain or burning when peeing
  • Pain in lower back, tummy or bones
  • Weight loss

If you ever spot blood in your pee you should speak to your GP immediately.

Treatment

The type of treatment you receive will depend on the location and stage of your cancer. The main treatments include:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Removal of bladder (Cystectomy)
  • Immunotherapy
  • Target cancer drugs

Your treatment plan may have a combination of these.

Kidney cancer

Kidney cancer, or renal cancer, is one of the most common in the UK. It usually affects people aged 60 or over and is rare in people under 50. It can often be cured if found early.

Symptoms

  • Blood in your pee
  • Pain in lower back or under ribs
  • Lump or swelling on the side of your body

If you ever spot blood in your pee you should speak to your GP immediately.

Treatment

The type of treatment you receive will depend on the location and stage of your cancer. The main treatments include:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Cryotherapy
  • Radiofrequency

Your treatment plan may have a combination of these.
