Local Maternity & Neonatal System

The Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) is a partnership of organisations and parents working together to improve local maternity services. We are the people who are involved in providing, receiving, or commissioning maternity care.

The LMNS have been implementing national recommendations for a safer and more personalised care via initiatives such as the Long-Term plan, Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle, the Ockenden Report and most recently the Three-year Maternity and Neonatal Delivery Plan. A key focus is on reducing health inequalities and improving access to services to ensure better pregnancy and birth outcomes for both the woman and baby. The LMNS works closely with Coventry and Warwickshire Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership to ensure the voices of service users are heard and that services are co-produced to delivered to meet our population’s needs.

Our Maternity Units

The Coventry and Warwickshire LMNS covers Coventry, Rugby, North Warwickshire and South Warwickshire. People registered with GPs in these areas are likely to receive most of their maternity care through midwifery services and obstetric consultant care via one of the following hospitals: South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust or University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. Some women, babies, and families with special requirements may need to travel outside this area.

All our maternity services are committed to safety and improvement at all levels. You can give birth at home, in a midwife led unit, or a consultant led delivery room. Talk to your midwife about your preferences when discussing your birthing plan. This is personal to you and depends on your medical history, circumstances and what is available at your maternity service. A birth plan is a record of what you would like to happen during your labour and after birth. You can ask questions and change your mind at any time.

Birth Centres are small maternity units which are staffed and run by experienced midwifes and support workers to provide a comfortable more homelike environment. There are two birth centres within Coventry and Warwickshire.

The Bluebell Birth Centre (Warwick) and Lucina Birth Centre (Coventry). George Eliot in Nuneaton is a smaller maternity hospital but has two fully equipped rooms with birthing pools located in a quiet area on the labour ward.
