Diabetes awareness and information
We want to ensure that as many people as possible across Coventry and Warwickshire are aware of the variety of local support services available to them when they are diagnosed with diabetes or looking for ways to prevent getting the disease in the first place.
We are trying to keep our population healthy through a balanced diet and daily exercise and stopping smoking, as well as reducing your alcohol intake to recommended levels by Public Health England.
For people who have been identified as ‘at risk’ of developing Type 2 diabetes, we have a FREE to attend national diabetes prevention programme which supports changes to lifestyle to prevent development of Type 2 diabetes.
There are several risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, some of which can't be changed, such as your age or your family history. However, there are other risk factors such as your weight which are very much in your control – indeed, the risk of Type 2 diabetes can be reduced by getting support to lose weight, becoming more physically active and eating healthy food.
Those living with diabetes can attend a FREE structured education course called DESMOND which will provide them with information and resources to self-manage their disease and avoid any serious complications.
For people with Type 1 diabetes we have invested in education for children and adults to support them living with the disease on a daily basis.

People in Coventry and Warwickshire can reduce and prevent their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by making some simple changes to their lifestyle.
Being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes can have a devastating impact on people and their families – it is a leading cause of preventable sight loss in people of working age and is a major contributor to kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and many of the common types of cancer.
It’s very important that you find out if you are at high risk of Type 2 diabetes so you can get support to lower your risk. You may also be eligible to sign up for your free local Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.
The programme which is delivered by Xyla provides personalised support to help people achieve a healthy weight, improve their diet and become more physically active, all together which have been shown to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
