Rapid Access

Rapid Access is a quick and early assessment of suspected cancer. Our service ensures people with symptoms related to cancer receive the right investigations and treatments from specialist doctors and nurses.

Across Coventry and Warwickshire we carry out most of these investigations and treatments at George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton, Warwick Hospital, Warwick, and University Hospital, Coventry. 

Following a referral from your doctor you will be invited to attend an appointment at one of our hospitals.

Why have I been referred?

You have been referred for an urgent appointment by your GP, who wants you to see a specialist to check for possible cancer. 
Under the NHS you have the right to be seen by a specialist within 2 weeks of referral. 

Can I choose which hospital to go to?

To make sure you are seen within 2 weeks you may be asked to attend a clinic at any of the hospitals in the region, this may not always be the closest to where you live. This may be because your local hospital does not have the specialist doctor or equipment needed. 

If your first appointment is not your preferred hospital it does not mean that you will continue to be seen at the same hospital for further tests or treatments. You may be asked to go to a different hospital for these.

What do I need to do now?

Please read through the information you have been given by your GP, the hospital or from the NHS through the post. You should have been provided with information about what will happen at your appointment, including anything you may need to do to prepare.

I can’t make my appointment. Who do I contact to change my date/time?

It is important that you are seen by a member of the hospital team as soon as possible. If you are not able to attend your appointment please call the number on your original appointment letter.

If you are unable to attend your appointment it is important that you let us know so that we can find a suitable date for you and to offer your original slot to another patient. 

What happens next?

You will be contacted to arrange an appointment. This may be at short notice, for example the next day or any time within the next 2 weeks.
