Pregnancy & Smoking

Smoking in Pregnancy Review

The smoking in pregnancy review was commissioned by the Local Maternity System Board in order to gain a better understanding of the women who smoke during pregnancy and the factors that influence whether they quit smoking or not.

Important context informing the need for the review includes the following factors:

  • The known detrimental impacts of smoking on maternal and fetal health and the potentially avoidable costs associated with these poorer outcomes
  • Apparent geographical differences in smoking in pregnancy rates across Coventry and Warwickshire
  • The national 6% Smoking at Time of Delivery (SATOD) target that currently looks unachievable across the LMS footprint
  • The need to know whether there is compliance with important NICE and Saving Babies Lives guidance aimed at reducing smoking in pregnancy
  • Anticipated future NHS investment in hospital smoking services, including maternity services.

The review has included contributions from a wide range of services and individuals including maternity services, specialist stop smoking services, Health Visitor and Family Nurse Partnership services, Primary Care and Children’s Centres/Family Hubs, as well as commissioners and members of the LMS Board.

Key components of the review include:

  • Analysis of maternity and smoking services data
  • Case note reviews
  • Staff surveys and discussion groups
  • Assessments of compliance with NICE and other relevant guidance

The review benefited from excellent collaboration between all services and agencies and from the close direction provided through the Smoking in Pregnancy Task and Finish Group.

Interested parties are encouraged to look at the review findings provided in the executive summary, the main report and the separate concise evidence review.

Any comments or queries should be directed to pmo@cwstp.uk in the first instance.
