STAY SAFE DURING THE AMBER COLD HEALTH ALERT IN THE WEST MIDLANDS

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an Amber Cold Health Alert for the West Midlands, in effect from 12:00 PM on 2 January 2025 to 12:00 PM on 8 January 2025. During this time, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, potentially affecting health and wellbeing, particularly for vulnerable individuals.

What the Cold Weather Means for Our Communities

Cold weather can have serious impacts on health, especially for older people, young children, those with long-term health conditions, and those living in cold homes. It can also increase pressure on health and social care services, as well as cause disruption to travel and daily routines.

In Coventry and Warwickshire, all health and social care partners are enacting their winter plans to maintain essential services and support those most at risk.

How You Can Stay Safe

To protect yourself and others during the cold weather, here are some key tips:

Keep Warm

  • Heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F) in the rooms you use most.
  • Wear layers of clothing to retain body heat.
  • Use blankets and hot water bottles if needed.

Check on Others

  • Look out for older neighbours, friends, or relatives who may be more vulnerable.
  • Offer to help with shopping or other essential tasks if they are unable to go out.

Stay Healthy

  • Keep moving to generate body heat, even if it’s just gentle stretches.
  • Eat warm, nutritious meals and stay hydrated.
  • If you take regular medication, ensure you have enough to last through the cold spell.

Plan Ahead

  • Check the latest weather forecasts on the Met Office Website.
  • Take care when traveling, as icy conditions may make roads and pavements hazardous.
  • Stock up on essentials like food, water, and heating supplies.

Help and Support

If you or someone you know is struggling to stay warm or access essential services, support is available. Contact your local council or voluntary organisations for advice and assistance.

Our Commitment to You

We want to reassure everyone that health and social care partners across Coventry and Warwickshire are fully prepared for this cold spell. Plans are in place to:

  • Provide care and support to those most at risk.
  • Ensure hospitals, care homes, and other settings remain safe and warm.
  • Minimise disruptions to essential services.

We are working together to keep our communities safe and supported during this period of severe weather.
