SENIOR DOCTOR ASKS PEOPLE NOT TO DELAY GETTING THEIR BOOSTER JAB AS MORE THAN 90,000 VACCINES ADMINISTERED LAST WEEK

A senior doctor in Coventry and Warwickshire today urged everyone who is eligible to get their booster jab, as new figures show the NHS vaccination programme racked up record numbers of jabs this weekend.

Dr Sarah Raistrick, GP and Chair of Coventry and Warwickshire ICB, called on everyone who qualifies for a booster jab, but has not yet received one, to book an appointment and get vaccinated before Christmas.

The call came after hard working NHS staff delivered a record-breaking figure of more than 90,000 vaccinations in Coventry and Warwickshire last week. This is double the number of vaccinations given in the previous week. Almost 30,000 of those were delivered at vaccination sites over the weekend alone as people get their vital jabs ahead of Christmas. This is really positive but there are still people who are eligible who are yet to come forward.

Dr Raistrick, said: “We delivered a huge number of vaccinations last week and are are expecting this week to be our biggest week since the programme started as people are getting the message about the importance of getting vaccinated.

“With Omicron cases rising and two doses of the vaccine not providing the protection we need it is vital to get a booster and lower your risk of serious illness or hospitalisation.

“Like all medicines, the Covid vaccines can cause side effects, but please don’t be put off. Any side effects are often mild and short lived, but the benefit of having the booster for you, your family and your friends is substantial – getting boosted is our best hope of protecting people against the new variant.”

UK Health Security Agency data shows that two doses of a Covid vaccine are not enough to stop people becoming unwell from Omicron, but a third booster prevents around 75% of people getting any Covid symptoms.

Every adult in the region is eligible for a jab three months after their second dose following updated guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation on 29 November.

Anyone who has not had their first or second dose is also encouraged to book an appointment as soon as possible.

It’s now even easier for people in Coventry and Warwickshire to get their jab as hundreds of sites are available at convenient locations – some offering walk-in appointments.

The best way to get your vaccine is by booking online at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/ or by calling 119 – please do keep checking availability as appointments are loaded onto the system every day.
