SECOND PART OF NHS CANCER BUS TOUR ENCOURAGES WARWICKSHIRE COMMUNITIES TO ‘CHECK IT, DON'T CHANCE IT’ BRINGING VITAL SCREENING INFORMATION TO LOCALS
6 June 2025
After a successful launch in Coventry last month, the NHS Cancer Bus Tour will be kicking off the next leg of its journey delivering life-saving information this June.
Residents across North and South Warwickshire will be able to access vital cancer screening information and talk with healthcare professionals from local hospitals on their doorstep.
The Cancer Bus Tour, organised by NHS Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), aims to raise awareness of the symptoms of cancer and the importance of screening to support early diagnosis – which can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment.
Onboard the bus, visitors will find a team of healthcare experts including GPs, consultants, and representatives from the Targeted Lung Health Check and Bowel Screening teams. The team will be encouraging residents to “check it, don’t chance it” by engaging in conversations about cancer screening and local support services.
Sharing her journey about receiving treatment for bowel cancer, Fiona Bates, said:
“The Cancer Bus Tour offering information about screening is great as it helps to demystify concerns about screening and what it involves.
“After experiencing changes in my bowel habits, I visited my GP and was referred to the screening team for further investigation. I completed a FIT test at home, which required a sample of poo to be tested, and found out I had tested positive for bowel cancer. I started my care journey for treatment soon after.
“The FIT test was simple and easy to use and while it is daunting to go through the process, it saved my life. I’d urge anyone to visit the bus when it comes to a location near them.”
Dr Sankara Raman, Consultant and Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology, GI Cancer and Non-Specific Cancer Pathway at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, added:
“Cancer will affect 1 in 2 people in their lifetime but having cancer is no longer the death sentence it was perceived to be in the past. Most, if not all cancers, can be treated but the key is early detection.
“People should be aware of what’s normal for them and if any new signs or symptoms appear, they should seek help early even if they don’t seem worrying initially. There is a lot of help available but knowing where to start, especially if you’re worried about the possibility of cancer, can be overwhelming.
“That’s why the Cancer Bus Tour is a fantastic initiative – it’s bringing the information right into the heart of our local communities.”
The tour offers a non-clinical, informal setting for those wanting to know more about symptoms and screening. The message is simple: check it, don’t chance it.
