OVER 50S ENCOURAGED TO TAKE PART IN SCREENING TO MARK BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

April marks Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and the NHS in Coventry and Warwickshire is encouraging over 50s to take part in the bowel cancer screening programme when they are invited.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and almost 44,000 people are diagnosed with it every year. More than nine out of ten new cases (94%) are diagnosed in people over the age of 50, but it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early (Bowel Cancer UK).

The bowel cancer screening programme in Coventry and Warwickshire offers screening to all men and women aged between 54 to 74 who are registered locally with a GP, every two years. It aims to detect cancer at an early stage in people with no symptoms when treatment is likely to be more effective.

Those eligible for the screening will receive an at-home, easy-to-use testing kit. After completing it they will receive an update on their results within two-weeks.

For a behind-the-scenes look into how the screening programme works, watch our video below.
