IMPROVED ACCESS TO CARE FOR RESIDENTS THIS WINTER AT RUGBY URGENT TREATMENT CENTRE
22 December 2025
This winter, Rugby residents are encouraged to visit their local Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) first if they need care when their GP surgery is closed.
The UTC can help adults and children aged five and over with a wide range of urgent but not life-threatening problems. Whether you have an elbow or knee injury from football, a burn from the cooker, or a high temperature; choosing the right service means you can be seen more quickly, while A&E remains free to focus on serious and life-threatening emergencies.
To help more people know where to go, a local campaign – ‘GP closed? We’re open’ – is raising awareness of the GP out-of-hours care available at the UTC, making it easier for residents to get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
What does the UTC do?
Urgent Treatment Centres provide fast care for urgent but non-life-threatening problems. This includes things like sprains, strains, suspected broken bones, minor burns, cuts and other minor injuries.
At Rugby UTC there is also an X-Ray service available every day between 9am-10pm, if needed.
How do I access care at the UTC?
Rugby UTC is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides care for adults and children aged five and over.
You can either:
- Walk-in to the UTC at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, where a nurse will assess you and make sure you get the right care, or
- Call NHS 111, where you can be assessed over the phone and directed to the most appropriate service.
Doctor appointments are available at Rugby UTC outside normal GP surgery hours, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays. If you need to see a doctor, you will be booked into the next available appointment at the UTC.
UTCs are also available across Coventry and Warwickshire at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton and the City of Coventry Health Centre on Stoney Stanton Road in Coventry.
Imogen Staveley, Chief Medical Officer for Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board, said: "When accidents happen, like a child falling off their bike or a loved one slipping on ice, it’s easy to think A&E is your only option, especially when your GP is closed. But for many injuries and illnesses, Rugby Urgent Treatment Centre is open and ready to help adults and children aged five and over.
“You can get urgent care by calling NHS 111 or going straight to the UTC, and if you need to see a GP after assessment, you’ll be booked into the next available appointment.
“Remember, we’re here for you this winter. By choosing the right service you can get the care you need quickly and help make sure A&E is available for people with the most serious emergencies.”
