INTEGRATED CARE SYSTEM PLEDGES TO SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY BY JOINING THE CARE LEAVER COVENANT

Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care System (ICS) is proud to announce that it has signed up to the Care Leaver Covenant this week.

Young people can find it difficult leaving care and transitioning into adult life as they don’t typically have the same level of support around them that would ordinarily be offered by parents.

The Care Leaver Covenant aims to support care leavers aged 16-25 by creating meaningful opportunities in five key areas:

  • Independent living
  • Education, employment & training
  • Safety and security
  • Mental and physical health
  • Finance.

They also support care leavers to access those opportunities once they are in place to give them the best chance of living independently. Organisations which commit to the Care Leaver Covenant, in doing so, pledge to help provide additional support for those leaving care.

Coventry and Warwickshire ICS signing the pledge demonstrates our commitment and that of our partner organisations to make sure that young people leaving care can reach their full potential and enjoy the same opportunities in life as their peers.

After the Executive team and Board met and signed the pledge yesterday, Danielle Oum, Chair of Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board, said, “I’m really proud that we’ve signed up to the Care Leaver Covenant today. We know the importance of providing support and opportunities to people leaving care, who so frequently experience inequalities with things like access to employment, skills, and other opportunities.”

Anne Coyle, Managing Director of South Warwickshire Foundation Trust, said, “On behalf of South Warwickshire Foundation Trust, I’m delighted that we’ve been part of signing the Care Leaver Covenant as part of the wider Coventry and Warwickshire ICB commitment to ensuring that our young people have the best possible start and outcomes in life.”

Andy Hardy, Chief Executive of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, added “I fully support us all signing up today to the Care Leaver Covenant. We know that the start in life that people get makes the biggest difference to how their whole life goes and if we can help some of those that didn’t have the best start in life, that’s what we’re here for.”

Mel Coombes, Chief Executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust, said, “I think it’s really important to give people the best start in life we can, particularly for young care leavers, so we’re very interested in people coming to work for us. We’ve got lots of job opportunities and young people leaving care should feel free to contact us any time.”
