DON'T GET CAUGHT OUT OVER THE MAY BANK HOLIDAYS - THINK PHARMACY FIRST FOR MINOR ILLNESSES

Local people are being reminded to plan ahead and use community pharmacies for minor illnesses during the upcoming May bank holidays.

Residents across Coventry and Warwickshire are being encouraged to make use of local pharmacies as the first point of contact for common health concerns over the Early May Bank Holiday (Monday 4 May 2026) and Spring Bank Holiday (Monday 25 May 2026).

Opening hours will vary, but a number of pharmacies across the area will be open during the bank holidays, with many also operating into the evening. People are advised to check local opening times in advance to ensure they can access the most convenient service close to them.

Get the right care, first time

Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who can offer advice and treatment for a range of minor conditions, including:

Coughs, colds and sore throats
Earache
Sinusitis
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Infected insect bites
Minor skin conditions including impetigo and shingles

Using Pharmacy First for these conditions means many people can get the help they need quickly, without needing to wait for a GP appointment.

Plan ahead for the bank holiday

Residents are also being encouraged to:

Order repeat prescriptions in good time
Check they have enough essential medication
Keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home

Dr Will Taylor, Chief Medical Officer for Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board, said:

“Bank holidays can put extra pressure on NHS services, but community pharmacies are there to help. Highly trained pharmacists can provide fast, expert advice and treatment for many common conditions without the need for an appointment.

“We’re encouraging everyone to think ‘Pharmacy First’, check opening times in advance, and make sure they have any essential medicines they need ahead of the long weekend.”
