COVENTRY AND WARWICKSHIRE RESIDENTS URGED TO THINK 'PHARMACY FIRST’ OVER EASTER BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

NHS Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) is encouraging local people to use the Pharmacy First service for advice and treatment over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Pharmacy First is an NHS service that allows community pharmacists to assess and treat seven common conditions. These include earache, sore throat, sinusitis, shingles, urinary tract infections, infected insect bites and impetigo.

Highly trained pharmacists can offer clinical advice, recommend treatment and, where appropriate, supply prescription-only medicines. Consultations take place in private rooms and patients can walk in without an appointment.

Many pharmacies across Coventry and Warwickshire will remain open during the bank holiday period and can provide care for a range of common conditions without the need for a GP appointment. You can find opening times for pharmacies in Coventry and Warwickshire during Easter below.

The Easter bank holiday is traditionally a busy time for NHS services and A&E departments. By choosing Pharmacy First for minor illnesses, you can access care more quickly and help reduce pressure on GP practices and hospitals.

Michael Caley, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for NHS Coventry and Warwickshire ICB, said:

“Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who can provide expert advice and treatment, with the added benefit of being conveniently located in your local neighbourhood and community, close to home.

“They can also identify when further medical care is needed and refer patients to other NHS services if required.

“We’re asking residents to think Pharmacy First this Easter. Beyond the bank holiday, visiting a local pharmacy is often the quickest way to get the right advice and treatment for common conditions compared to seeing your GP or using urgent care services.

“If you need advice or treatment for things like a sore throat, earache, or a UTI, make your local pharmacy your first port of call.”
