#CLEANAIRDAY SUMMIT ON AIR QUALITY AND CHILD HEALTH HELD IN COVENTRY

To recognise and raise awareness about the impact that air quality has on children with respiratory conditions, the Coventry and Warwickshire Children’s Transformation Programme held a summit in Coventry on June 12th as part of the national #cleanairday campaign.

Coventry was chosen to host the summit as it has typically suffered from poor air quality and because it has higher proportions of children who live in areas of deprivation, which makes addressing health inequalities extremely important.

The event, which was co-produced by children and young people, was designed to allow children with asthma to give their views and thoughts on what it was like living with the condition and what priorities they would like to see decision makers focus on. Sheila Bates, Coventry Children’s Champion, and Barnardo’s, the children’s charity, were in attendance to speak to the young people.

Over 30 people attended the event from a range of system partners. Pat Seaman, Cabinet Member for Children, opened the event with Cllr Julia Lepoidevin bringing it to a close. There were also representatives from a number of council departments including education, climate change and sustainability, ecology, transport and highways, and health, as well the NHS, British Cycling, the Coventry and Warwickshire Air Quality Alliance and the third sector.

Three pledges were created at the event designed to take action to improve the air quality in the spaces and places where children spend their time, and all partners are committed to taking these forward over the next 12 months.
