CANCER ORGANISATIONS IN COVENTRY AND WARWICKSHIRE DELIVER CONFERENCE TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
5 December 2024
The Integrated Care Board’s (ICB) Cancer team brought together local charities and clinical experts from across the system on Wednesday 27th November to deliver a community conference to local people highlighting the importance of screening and looking out for signs and symptoms.
The event, organised by Coventry and Warwickshire ICB and Macmillan Cancer Support, and in partnership with Coventry Phoenix Lions Club and Neeraj Foundation Trust, was attended by over 300 people from the local area. It started with informative presentations about screening and early intervention delivered by local GPs.
There were also presentations given by consultants from across the system on gastrointestinal, breast and prostate cancers and what to expect regarding treatment and care, much of which was translated to Punjabi to help the attendees understand the information in their primary language.
The event was rounded off with a Q&A session which gave members of the local community the opportunity to raise concerns and ask questions, some of which helped to dispel cultural myths around cancer.
Kevin Davis, Non Executive Member for the ICB and Chair of Coventry Care Collaborative, said:
“Events such as these help to raise awareness and empower people to look after their health. It’s fantastic to see so many of the local community here today and for us to be delivering sessions where they are in a way that is accessible to them.
“I hope that this sharing of information about cancer awareness, prevention, treatment and the services on offer in Coventry and Warwickshire can be replicated across our patch.”
The Cancer team are now looking into delivering more events like this.
