Lady Godiva statue in Broadgate, CoventryCoventry’s Broadgate and its iconic Lady Godiva statue will join historic monuments, buildings and other high-profile sites across the country in ‘lighting up’ blue this week (July 2 - July 8) to celebrate a special NHS occasion.

Landmarks in England will be lit up in the famous blue that is synonymous with the NHS to help mark its 70th birthday on Thursday, July 5, and to recognise its special place in our lives.

Andy Hardy, Chief Executive Officer at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust and Better Health, Better Care, Better Value Chair, said: “It is brilliant that Broadgate and the Lady Godiva statue can join so many famous landmarks across the country in saying ‘Happy Birthday’ and lighting up blue to celebrate the NHS and the thousands of dedicated staff who have made it what it is over the last 70 years.

“During the celebrations, I’d like to ask local people to think about things that we can all do for ourselves and for one another to help the NHS work effectively, and to make sure services are used responsibly”

Councillor Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport at Coventry City Council said: “We’re really proud of our local NHS services and staff across Coventry and Warwickshire and we’re delighted to be able to join in the NHS 70 celebrations by lighting up Broadgate this week.”

Other locations ‘lighting up’ blue include the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and Blackpool Tower.

The NHS was founded in 1948 by the then Health Secretary Aneurin Bevan, to bring good quality healthcare to all that was free at the point of delivery.

To join in the celebrations of the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions, people are encouraged to take photos and share them via social media using the hashtags: #NHS70 and #LightUpBlue.
