AMBER COLD WEATHER ALERT ISSUED FOR MUCH OF UK - HOW TO STAY SAFE AS THE TEMPERATURE DROPS
8 January 2024
The Met Office has issued an amber cold weather health alert for large parts of the UK, including the Midlands, between 12pm on Monday 8th January and 12pm on Friday 12th January with a prolonged spell of low temperatures expected throughout this week.
In addition to the cold weather, there is also the possibility of sleet and snow showers which may cause disruption and pose a health risk for those who need to travel.
Those who are aged 65+ or who have an underlying health condition are being asked to take particular care during the cold snap, but people in other age groups should also take care and ensure they take action to minimise the risks.
The main way people can mitigate the impact of the colder weather is by heating the rooms in your home you spend the most time in to at least 18°c, which will help prevent illnesses such as colds and flu, as well as more serious health problems like pneumonia. Those at increased risk of illness or falls are also advised to avoid cold and icy outdoor conditions wherever possible.
People are also encouraged to check on their neighbours, family, and friends to make sure they are safe and have everything they need to stay healthy, including food and prescription medication.
It’s also important to make sure that any winter ailments are treated appropriately. If you are worried about your health or feeling down, contact your local pharmacist, NHS 111 or your GP, who will all be able to offer advice and support. In an emergency dial 999.
