A SPOTLIGHT ON PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS - KNOW YOUR RISKS & THE SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR

This month is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and the NHS in Coventry and Warwickshire is encouraging men to be aware of the risk factors of Prostate Cancer and the symptoms to look out for.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and one in eight will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. If you’re aged over 50, or you’re Black, or you have a family history of the disease, then your risk is even higher (Prostate Cancer UK).

What is Prostate Cancer?

The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis and part of the male reproductive system. Prostate Cancer usually develops slowly, and people who receive a diagnosis may not notice any signs for many years.

To find out more about the risk factors of Prostate Cancer and the symptoms to look out for, watch the video below to hear from Josh Hearne-Wilkins, a Uro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist and Manuela Canimo, Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist.

What support is available for people with Prostate Cancer?

It’s essential for men to understand the risks, the symptoms associated with it and where people can turn to for more information and support.

If you do have prostate cancer, you may not need treatment and if the cancer is at an early stage and not causing symptoms, your healthcare professionals may suggest that your condition is watched and monitored.

Alternatively, some cases of prostate cancer can be cured if treated in the early stages. Click on the video below to learn advice about what to expect after receiving a diagnosis.
