MACMILLAN’S SMART RESPONSE TO COVID KEEPS THE HELP AND SUPPORT COMING

Cancer support centres in south Warwickshire are reaching out to self-isolating cancer patients with a package of virtual support.

The team at The Macmillan Cancer Support Centres, usually based at our partner NHS hospitals in Warwick and Stratford, have found safe ways to continue to support people affected by cancer by working remotely and using telephone appointments to continue offering many of their services.

Deborah Smith, the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre manager, said: “We may be unable to offer our usual level of face to face discussions, but we remain committed to supporting people living with cancer across South Warwickshire at this difficult time.

“People living with cancer, their family and carers are already living with day to day challenges and the current situation only makes the situation more difficult. If you need help, we are only a phone call away. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.”

The team currently working out of Stratford Hospital can offer referral to remote access psychological support, and benefits advice by telephone appointment.

People can also email the team to ask questions if you need more information about your cancer or treatment, or about other virtual services available.

The centres were originally funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and are run by South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust. The centre supports anyone affected by cancer living in south Warwickshire and the surrounding area.

Rebecca Wherrell, Macmillan partnership manager, said: “The fact that the staff at the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre have quickly adapted to the situation and put plans in place to continue providing this service during such an unprecedented situation highlights their extraordinary dedication to supporting people living with cancer.”

Anyone affected by cancer in the south Warwickshire area can contact the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre team on 01789 205831 extension 5871. The team are available Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4pm. People can also email the centre at Macinfo@swft.nhs.uk.

Comprehensive information and support, including Macmillan’s latest guidance and advice on the impact of coronavirus on cancer care, is available at www.macmillan.org.uk. The charity’s online community continues to provide emotional and peer support. The Macmillan Support Line is open seven days a week between 8am and 8pm on 0808 808 00 00.

Macmillan is almost entirely funded by donations and can only support the growing number of people living with cancer with the help of its supporters. Visit macmillan.org.uk/getinvolved to donate or volunteer.
