Summary

We are seeking your views on the potential future locations of 35 community rehabilitation beds in South Warwickshire. Each year, some people leaving acute hospitals will need to use these beds so that they can recover and get better. In South Warwickshire, this equates to about 550 people a year. We are consulting on two potential options to ensure these beds remain accessible, effective and sustainable.

Why are we changing things?

  1. We need to be sure we are providing community rehabilitation beds with the right staff in the locations that most suit the growing needs of our ageing population with complex conditions.
  2. Our data shows that the highest demand for community beds is in the central and the northern area of South Warwickshire, so we need to make sure people from these areas are close to at least some of our community hospital beds.
  3. National and local plans, like the NHS Long Term Plan and Home First approach, tell us to improve care by supporting recovery at home or in the community, focusing on patient needs, promoting independence, and reducing reliance on hospitals
  4. We have had to make changes to the original Ellen Badger site. This site originally had had 16 community rehabilitation beds but the original building where the beds were was not fit for purpose and could no longer deliver safe care. The changes we had to make mean that the Ellen Badger site has room for a maximum number of 12 beds and we need to find the best way to accommodate the additional beds which could not go back.

What are our options for the future location of these beds?

  • Option A – Three sites: Distribute all 35 beds across three sites: Ellen Badger Hospital, Leamington Spa Hospital, and Stratford Hospital. This would reduce the number of beds currently at Stratford Hospital and Leamington Spa Hospital and return up to 12 beds to the Ellen Badger site.
  • Option B – Two sites: Provide all 35 beds at two sites, Leamington Spa Hospital and Stratford Hospital. The wards would remain the same current size at Leamington Spa Hospital and Stratford Hospital and there would no longer be any beds at the Ellen Badger site.

Both options have been developed with input from members of the public, patients, and stakeholders to ensure they reflect the priorities and needs of our communities. They have been informed using data and evidence-based processes, and with the impact on our staff and our finances in mind.
