Semaglutide (Wegovy)
Semaglutide (Wegovy)
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weight loss medication that works by helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing your appetite. It is given as a once-weekly injection alongside healthy eating, increased physical activity and behavioural support.
Semaglutide is also used in the management of Type 2 diabetes under a different brand name and for different clinical purposes.
Is Wegovy available on the NHS?
Wegovy is available as an injection and tablets. Wegovy tablets are not routinely available on the NHS and are not commissioned by Coventry & Warwickshire ICB.
Wegovy injection may be available through specialist weight management services for some patients who meet NICE eligibility criteria.
NICE has also recommended Wegovy injection (semaglutide) as a treatment option for some adults who are living with obesity and established cardiovascular disease, such as a previous heart attack, stroke or peripheral arterial disease. The aim is to help reduce the risk of future cardiovascular events alongside supporting weight loss.
Can my GP prescribe Wegovy?
In Coventry and Warwickshire, arrangements for providing this treatment pathway are still being developed. Wegovy injection for cardiovascular risk reduction is expected to require specialist clinical assessment and advice and is not currently available through a routine GP prescribing pathway. Patients do not need to contact their GP specifically about this at present. Further information will be published once local access arrangements have been agreed.
